Twenty-four days of kit that ends up in the pack, not the bin.

An advent calendar for whoever in the house is already looking at the weather for the next hike. Behind the twenty-four doors sit the small pieces that go missing from a day pack: a torch, a compass, paracord, a fire starter, carabiners and a handful of multi-tools. A zip pouch comes with it, so the whole lot has somewhere to live once December is over.

The details that matter

• 24 numbered doors. One tool or accessory a day from the first of December through to Christmas Eve
• Built to be used. Steel and aluminium tools rather than novelty items — they go in the pack and stay there
• Light and fire. A compact torch and a ferro fire starter, both small enough for a pocket
• Cord and clips. Paracord and carabiners for tarps, packs and anything that needs tying down
• Storage pouch included. A zip pouch to keep the whole set together after Christmas
