A mushroom lamp turned from real timber, with a tap to dim and no cord across the bedside.

A small night light shaped like a mushroom and made from solid wood rather than a wood-look plastic: the grain runs through the cap and the stem, and it has the weight to match. One tap on the base steps through the brightness, from a reading glow down to a barely-there warmth for falling asleep. It charges over USB and runs for days on a charge, so it sits on a bedside, a shelf or a desk without a cable. Two timbers, two heights.

The details that matter

• Solid walnut or beech. Turned from a single piece of timber; dark walnut or pale beech, each with its own grain
• Touch dimming. Tap the base to cycle through brightness levels; hold to switch off
• USB rechargeable. Charges from any USB port and holds a charge for several nights
• Warm white LED. A low, amber-toned light that suits a bedroom, not the cool white of an overhead
• Two heights. 10 cm short and stout, or 17 cm with a bit more presence
